    Faces of Apathy

I recently went to a children’s dance recital. I was struck by the faces of the kids as they performed; most of them seemed to occupy a space somewhere between apathy and complete misery. They danced not out of joy or desire for self-expression, but out of beaten-down obedience, rather like programmed robots, lamely performing for the parents in attendance, all of whom laughed and grinned and snapped pictures. I took pictures too, but I was more interested in documenting the agony of the kids who clearly did not want to be there, and these are the best of them. They’re all just a little bit disturbing, but also a little bit hilarious. Don’t worry, kids, one day you’ll be able to put those bastards in a retirement home. Click the link to see them all.

I made many similar faces at my own, limited dance recitals - except I think I was ten or eleven at the time.
