I don’t get a lot of non-spam comments on my primary, long-form weblog, Zembla, but I do get a lot of random messages via Meebo. People write to defend Ozzie Smith’s defense, profess their love of Three Musketeers, mourn a dead friend, and get help with fifth-grade essays on Christopher Columbus. Recently, I got my favorite random Meebo message yet, which was probably in response to my essay about “Hunger Strike” and playing guitar in the rain. Here it is:
THIS HAS BEEN DRIVING ME NUTS, I CANT REMEMBER WHO IT WAS THAT PERFORMED I BELIEVE ON MTV LIVE(CANT REMEMBER THE GROUP OR THE SONG) BUT IT WAS IN THE POURING RAIN, THOUGHT IT WAS EDDIE VEDDER, I THINK IM WRONG NOW, OUT ON STAGE ALL BY HIMSELF- ANY IDEAS BASED ON THIS, U SEEM TO KNOW YOUR STUFF?
Meeboguest48870 is talking about Gavin Rossdale’s tour de force solo performance of “Glycerine”, from MTV’s Spring Break 1996, where he played during a lightning storm. He risked electrocution in order to maximize rocking. It was an appropriately dangerous song choice, because, according to Rossdale himself, this song is about how love is like a bomb. Meeboguest48870, wherever you are, enjoy “Glycerine”.
